Character’s Personality

Love is an abstract feeling that cannot be separated from human’s life. A human being everyday time deals with this kind of feeling. Consciously or not, physically and emotionally everyday person needs it. Maslow said that is possible to live a life without love, but such a life is on a rather low plane of existence (Warga, 1983:318).

Love is an element that cannot be separated fro literature itself. It has become difficult to imagine literature without love, maybe it feels very weird. Bayley said that since the Middle Ages the two (love and literature) have depended on each other more and more, and heir interrelation is now as complex as civilization itself (Bayley, 1960:3). Almost every literary work of the imagination has the idea of love. Bayley said that the idea of love is like the idea of morality; it is included naturally in literature as it is in life (1960:3).

In a story, love has close relation with the character’s personality or attitude. It can be seen how far love involves in their personality and attitude. Love can makes a strong character fall, or the other way, a weak character can be strong because of love. Love is something that invisible but it can be felt, so love is very interesting and can be intelligently discussed only when it embedded in the events of  situation or a story, such love in The Birthmark an interesting short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
